SEO. Long haul or quick fix?
Wouldn't it be nice if we could master the science that is Search Engine Optimisation and achieve high rankings by simply editing Meta tags. In the modern age of SEO, that isn't going to happen.
SEO requires a combination of efforts over a sustained period of time. Unfortunately there are many company directors out there that want to eat their cake right away. To top that, many companies want to reap the financial reward of a top Google placement, but they don’t want to pay the SEO what they are worth.
The bottom line is, if you have no patience or you want a quick fix then go and spend a fortune on a short lived pay per click campaign because organic SEO isn't for you.
Thankfully, there are some realistic companies left in the world who understand and value long term strategy.
The basis of a good, sound SEO campaign is built on keyword selection. Without the right key words you aren't targeting an effective audience. Make sure that your keywords are agreed and that your SEO can show some figures on keyword popularity. Word tracker is a tool that we use and recommend. However, if you want to use Word tracker on your own then make sure you fully understand how to use it to get the best results.
When it comes to SEO, content is the undisputed king. Make sure that your web site contains good, healthy copy and that new content is added on a regular basis. When adding the content, ensure that there is a strong linking structure throughout the site to enable the search engines to crawl all of your content. A good way to keep on top of your site structure is to built a HTML site map, that is a site map that is visible to the web site visitor as a web page. Your site map should list all the pages on your site, as active links, in a logical presentation.
When thinking about the design of your pages, the real killer points for SEO are Page Title and description tags. These appear at the top of your pages and is the first point of call when a Search Engine spider visits your site. Make sure that these contain your keywords, but don't over do it or you could be excluded for using spamming techniques.
Google page rank, the calculation and scoring used by Google to mark the relevance of a site, takes into account page content and popularity from other web sites. It is therefore important that, over time, you build up a good directory of back link from relative sources. These can be sites in the same industry as you, blogs or social media sites or articles hosting on 3rd party web sites.
Finally, there is nothing that beats word of mouth. Make sure that you advertise your web site on all of your literature, email footers, flyers, publications and order forms. Educate your employees to communicate your web address when talking to new (or existing) clients. The key to get visitors returning to your site is to keep the content fresh, informative and updated.
Remember, patience is a virtue. It could easily take a year, or longer, for a web site to list in a competitive field. Try not to let this get you down. Take this time to continue to improve your site and give the competition a run for their money. Eventually your persistence patience and positive thinking will pay off.
It doesn't matter how well you market your web site you will NOT become an overnight success. Just like most things in life taking the easy way out when it comes to marketing your business online isn't going to create you long lasting success. If you want an impressive future that provides you with plenty of reward, you need to spend the time and money and do things right the first time.
Search Engine Optimisation does work, but essentially, good things come to those that wait. Sound businesses aren't built in a day.
